Hello, everyone, welcome to “Inconvenient Truths”. I am your host Jennifer Zeng.
Today I will talk about two topics: Will candles still be lit in Hong Kong this year on June 4, the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre? Why is the CCP tightening control over Internet Financial Giants such as Alibaba and Tencent?
Before we move on, please make sure you subscribe to and share my channel if you haven’t. We need to fight hard in this battle between freedom and censorship. So let’s fight together
Now, let’s move to our first topic.
June 4 Vigil Organizer Says Candles Will Be Lit in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park
June 4 this year will mark the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, and it will be the first year since the Chinese regime implemented the national security law in Hong Kong. While a number of democratic activists were given jail terms for participating in last year’s peaceful Tiananmen memorial rally, will this year’s event still be on like in the past 31 years?
The organizer of each year’s event vowed that candlelight would still be lit in Victoria Park next month, despite pressure from Beijing authorities.
You know, the organizer of each year’s event is Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China (let’s call it the “Alliance” from now on).
Hang Tung Chow (鄒幸彤), a Hong Kong barrister and vice-president of the Alliance said that candles in Victoria Park will be lit as usual regardless of whether or not they get permission from the authorities.
Chow said that the Alliance has notified the police of the June 4 activities, but has yet to receive a reply.
Richard Tsoi, secretary of the Alliance, said that the organization will meet with the police tomorrow (on May 20) to try to get permission. Due to the current political situation, the Alliance says they have to be careful and “work more cautiously within the legal framework.”
On May 4, the Alliance received a notification from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, which states that the department has suspended the processing of venue bookings in response to the pandemic. This means that the Victoria Park venue will not be approved.
Despite that, Chow (鄒幸彤) said, the Alliance still plans to enter Victoria Park, as the rally will be legal since the police have not opposed it.
She said, “We have our own bottom line, which is not to be crushed by their red line.”
Even if the police object to the rally, she said, “They cannot oppose me going out with a candle, they cannot oppose me going anywhere with a candle. We insist on having a candlelight vigil in Victoria Park.”
Chow said that in the coming days, the Alliance will work with different organizations to put up street stalls and distribute candles to the public.
She hopes that more people can be motivated to help organizations set up street stalls, so that on June 4, many people can take the candles with them to places they can go. The Alliance will also launch an online campaign so that people from different places can participate.
Participants of Last Year’s June 4 Rally Sentenced
On June 4 last year, although the Hong Kong government banned the rally in Victoria Park on the pretext of the pandemic, tens of thousands of people still entered the park to light candles. The police did not stop the public from entering, and participants left peacefully after the memorial ceremony.
However, 26 pro-democracy activists, who participated in the rally, were charged with “taking part in an unauthorized assembly.” Among them, Joshua Wong, Lester Shum, Tiffany Yuen and Jannelle Rosalynne Leung were sentenced to 4 to 10 months in prison on May 6.
Although the rally was peaceful, Judge Stanley Chan said in his ruling that those people were sentenced because “the event was held on a special day. This is a potential risk factor that cannot be underestimated or ignored.”
This is to say that people can be sentenced for attending a peaceful event only because that event was held on a “special day.” How ridiculous is that, right?
Among the 26 activists charged, 20 have pleaded not guilty, two have escaped from Hong Long, and live in the UK now. They are Nathan Law and Sunny Cheung(張崑陽).
The case will be brought back to court on June 11. All the 20 people may also face imprisonment.
From this we can see how things are rapidly getting worse in Hong Kong since the so called national security law was implemented by Beijing in June last year, following the withdrawal of an extradition bill in October 2019, which once triggered nearly 2 million people to take to the streets on June 16 that year.
The national security law was drafted behind closed doors by members of China’s rubber-stamp legislature, the National People’s Congress (NPC), bypassing Hong Kong’s Legislative Council. Many people feared the harsh measures could be used to override existing legal processes and erode the city’s civil and political freedoms.
Two high-profile figures of the Alliance have already been sentenced. Lee Cheuk-yan 李卓人, the chairman of the organization, was sentenced to 14 months in prison for his role in a peaceful anti-extradition bill protest in August 2019 and is currently serving his sentence.
The vice-chairman of the Alliance, Albert Ho, was sentenced to 12 months in prison and two years probation for his involvement in the August 2019 protest.
Be ‘More Flexible’ or ‘Uphold Promises?’
Richard Tsoi, secretary of the Alliance, told The Epoch Times that in the face of severe legal and political risks, a flexible approach to commemorate the June 4 Incident should be considered.
He said, compared to one year ago, the national security law has come into effect. The political environment is worse, and legal risks are higher.
He said, “I think we have to think about how to be more flexible and preserve our strength while sticking to our principles”.
However, Chow disagrees with him.
She said, “Right now, it is not a question of how much strength we want to preserve for ourselves, it is how much strength the government wants to eliminate. Unless you don’t fight for democracy, unless you give up this fight, some things cannot be avoided.”
Chow added that people in mainland China were sentenced to three, four, or even 10 years for commemorating the Tiananmen Square massacre, and the people of Hong Kong should uphold their promises to the victims, the Tiananmen Mothers, the exiled and imprisoned brothers, sisters, and friends who have fought for democracy.
The photos you just saw were all taken on June 4 last year in Victoria Park in Hong Kong.
The Tiananmen Square protests, a youth-led movement advocating for democratic reforms, have become a taboo subject in China. The Chinese regime won’t disclose the number or names of those killed in the clampdown. Death toll estimates from human rights groups and witnesses range from several hundred to several thousand, some even say at least ten thousand.
From 1989 to 2019: Hong Kong’s Involvement in China’s Pro-democracy Movement
Although the 1989 pro-democracy movement was centered in Beijing, the people of Hong Kong were also deeply involved.
After the CCP declared martial law in Beijing on May 19, 1989, more than 40,000 Hongkongers took to the streets on the following day, despite the typhoon, to oppose the crackdown.
On May 21, over 1 million Hongkongers held a protest, accounting for about one-fifth of Hong Kong’s population.
The Alliance we mentioned earlier was founded in May 1989, during the protests in Beijing, with Szeto Wah (司徒華), one of the founding fathers of Hong Kong’s democratic movement, as its first chairman.
On June 4 that year, Hongkongers were horrified by the CCP’s massacre in Beijing. Soon after, the Alliance launched “Operation Yellowbird” and has helped a large number of student leaders and participants in the movement to flee from China.
Since then, for 31 consecutive years, the Alliance has held a candlelight memorial service at Victoria Park on June 4. The maximum number of participants was 180,000 in 2012, 2014, and 2019 respectively.
So, after 31 years of undisrupted memorial services, if this year’s event cannot be held as usual, I think many people will feel very sad.
Of course the situation in Hong Kong is already bad enough. But how worse will it become? People still want to wait and see.
Now, let’s move to our next topic.
China’s Regulators Warn 13 Chinese Internet Firms Amidst Internal Power Struggle
The CCP’s regulators recently interviewed 13 Chinese internet firms following a third interview of Jack Ma’s Ant Group. It is obvious that power struggles inside the CCP are behind these interviews.
Among other issues, supervision of the shareholding structure and capital was reportedly emphasized in the interviews.
The interviewed giants include well known companies such as Tencent, JD.com, ByteDance, and Trip.com Group Finance, etc.
Similar to Ant Group, these 13 companies all have integrated operations, large business volume, and strong industry influence.
In the interview meeting, Pan Gongsheng(潘功勝), Vice Governor of the Chinese Central Bank put forward seven requirements:
(1) All financial activities must be supervised;
(2) Payments should be done in their “original form,” while “inappropriate connections” between payment tools and other financial products should be severed, non-bank accounts should be strictly controlled and prevented from expanding to the public sector;
(3) Monopoly of information on financial platforms should be ended;
(4) Management of key aspects such as shareholder qualifications, shareholding structure, capital, risk isolation, and connected transactions payments, etc, should be strengthened;
(5) Improve corporate governance;
(6) Regulate the issuance and trading of asset securitization products and overseas listing;
(7) Strengthen the consumer protection mechanism.
Pan Gongsheng also chaired the third interview meeting with Ant Group, raising five rectification requirements, which were similar to the 7 requirements.
Up to now there is no news or reports about whether the 13 companies have shareholding structures or capital problems. However, Xi Jinping has long been investigating the shareholding structure background of Ant Group, and found that former CCP leader Jiang Zemin’s faction was behind it.
Ant’s Complex Ownership Structure
According to the Wall Street Journal, growing unease in Beijing over Ant Group’s complex ownership structure was another reason why the CCP blocked Ant Group’s IPO.
The Wall Street Journal report said the CCP found that Boyu Capital, which is effectively controlled by Jiang Zemin’s grandson Jiang Zhicheng, holds a stake in Ant in a roundabout way through a private equity fund, Beijing Jingguan; while Li Botan, the son-in-law of former Politburo Standing Committee member Jia Qinglin, who has close ties to Jiang Zemin, holds a stake in Ant through Beijing Zhaode Investment Group.
The report mentioned that many of Jiang’s men have been purged in Xi Jinping’s corruption crackdown, but Jiang still has a certain degree of influence behind the scenes.
As early as 2014, the Chinese edition of The Epoch Times exclusively broke the story that after Zhou Yongkang, former Secretary of the CCP’s Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission and important member of the Jiang faction, inspected Tencent in 2011, Jiang’s niece Jiang Jin was appointed as the person in charge of the government affairs of Tencent QQ.
Under Jiang Jin’s leadership, Tencent began deep cooperation with the CCP’s Ministry of National Security and Ministry of Public Security. Both of them are two of the CCP’s important tools to control and persecute Chinese people.
Internet Financial Giants Required to Study ‘The Spirit’ of Xi Jinping’s Speech
Immediately after Ant Group was interviewed for the third time, on April 13, Zhejiang Province, where Ant Group is headquartered, held a special meeting on the Internet platform at which local officials stressed the need to further study and implement the spirit of Xi Jinping’s speech.
When the 13 companies were later interviewed, the financial regulators emphasized the same requirement.
Among the interviewed companies, some are regarded as having a Jiang faction background, such as Tencent and Meituan Financial, in which Tencent has a stake.
Why is the CCP so upset about these Internet financial giants?
Because, once Internet financial platforms become big enough, they can greatly influence the flow of capital and market confidence, and control the consumer data. If the authorities cannot control these financial platforms, the consequences could be disastrous.
For example, in 2015, during the turbulence of the Chinese stock market, a third of the value of A-shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange was lost in one month.
Many people believed that the market crash was a result of “collusion” between anti-Xi forces within the CCP and foreign capital.
That’s why the authorities now feel they must guard against similar risks and know who exactly is behind those big financial platforms.
Also, by controlling the information and data, the authorities not only can monitor the people, but also can control the big data of people’s life and consumption. That’s why the authorities must take tight control over these platforms.
So that’s the reality of the CCP’s China. Even if you say that you will follow and obey the party, the party still feels uneasy if you become too big. Everything must be under 100% control.
I know many people in the West were charmed by Jack Ma. He speaks good English. His talks are interesting, he is rich and he is smart, etc.
But recently when he made his first public appearance after disappearing for a long time, people found him looking a lot older and more pitiful. The University he owns, Hupan University, was also targeted. This video shows the big sign of Hupan University being destroyed, with the words plastered over.
So that’s the tragedy of living in CCP’s China. No one is safe, regardless of whether you are rich or poor.
That’s all for today’s Inconvenient Truths. Thank you so much for watching. Please spread this video so that more people become aware.
Thank you. See you next time.

CCP Advisor Talks About Winning the “Biological War”, Military Demonstrations in Japan & Unrestricted Warfare in Taiwan
Hello, everyone, welcome to “Inconvenient Truths”. I am your host Jennifer Zeng.
Today I will talk about three topics, all very important. 1) About a top CCP professor’s shocking admission that China won the “biological warfare” in 2020. 2) About a series of Taiwan’s unexpected emergent situations, and whether the CCP is waging “unrestricted warfare” against Taiwan; 3) About Japan, Europe and the US’s joint effort to tackle the CCP’s threat. So please make sure you stick around till the end.
CCP Top Advisor: China Won “Biological Warfare”
First, let’s watch a top CCP professor’s astonishing statement about China having won the “biological warfare” in 2020. Please make sure you read the English subtitles as he is speaking Chinese.
OK, that’s basically a startling admission that the CCP virus, or COVID19 pandemic, is biological warfare, and China won that warfare in 2020.
And what is the significance for the CCP to win that warfare? Let’s watch another clip, in which this professor presents his big post-2020, or post biological warfare vision for the CCP and the world.
Did you notice? When he mentioned the CCP virus, he said “our COVID19 pandemic”, as if the CCP owns this pandemic, or is the master of this pandemic.
Let’s read the screenshot of the translation of his most important message together again:
So the title is:
“What does the year 2020 signify?”
The message is:
“The year 2020 will witness the turning point of modernization in the past five hundred years. Five hundred years ago, the Western sea power countries started the modernization led by the physical and chemical revolutions; after 2020, the land power countries in East Asia will start the modernization led by the biological revolution. A moderately prosperous society developed by Chinese civilization is a sustainable green economy for the earth’s ecology.”
The above two clips are all from a 20 minute speech uploaded on Jan 2, 2021 to China’s own version of YouTube Bilibili. Although he didn’t say that China launched a biological war against the US and the world, the fact that he repeatedly used the term biological war, or people’s biological war, makes the viewers think that subconsciously, he believes the pandemic is a biological war, and the CCP won this war as it is “our COVID19 pandemic”. And this pandemic has given the CCP a once in every 500 year opportunity to become the next No. 1 superpower of the world.
By the way, Chen Ping is a professor emeritus at Beijing University, China’s most prestigious university-by the way, Beijing University is also where I studied. I graduated from there with a Master of Science degree.
As a professor at Beijing University, Chen Ping had proximity to China’s ruling communists. He is now a senior researcher at Fudan University, also a highly prestigious University, which is in China’s economic capital, Shanghai. He is “Chair of the Academic Committee, Center for New Political Economy.” This puts him at the heart of strategic thinking in China about how to deal with the United States.
He actually gained his PHD in Physics at the University of Texas, Austin in the 1980s.
Did you notice his ending statement? “If you know your enemy and yourself, you will be able to dominate the world.”
OK, that’s the video I dug out and translated. I don’t know how much more evidence we need to wake the people in the world who are still thinking that the CCP can be tamed, or can become a healthy part of our world.
Now, let’s move to our next topic: Taiwan.
A Sudden Surge of CCP Virus Cases
After experiencing accelerating tensions and threats from the CCP for months, Taiwan is now troubled with more unexpected emergent situations. While one commentator in Hong Kong said that the public in Taiwan should watch out for unrestricted warfare waged by the CCP, another former Taiwanese congressional assistant thinks Taiwan is winning.
After being looked up as a role model for its CCP virus (COVID-19) pandemic control, Taiwan suddenly experienced a surge of local cases.
As of today (May 21) , there have been 3139 confirmed cases and 15 deaths. 335 new cases were reported on May 17, setting a new record.
Taiwanese health authorities said that nearly all the new cases on that day, or 333 in total, were the result of local transmission. Only two cases were identified as overseas arrivals.
The authorities also announced that from May 19 until June18 the entry of non-Taiwanese nationals who do not hold a residence permit (including a residence visa) in Taiwan will be suspended and the transit of passengers to Taiwan will also be suspended.
In the meantime, Taipei City and New Taipei City have upgraded their epidemic alert to level 3 from the 15th to the 28th. Restrictions are imposed on many activities and industries. Residents are encouraged to stay home, gather less and go out less, and to wear masks whenever they go out.
Because of the surge of COVID cases, Taiwan’s stock market suffered a sharp fall of 1,630 points, or 10 percent last Friday, and plunged a further 3 percent on Monday. It bounced back for about 6 percent on Tuesday, and has been hovering at relatively lower levels in the following days.
Major Blackouts
On Monday and last Thursday, within 5 days, Taiwan has experienced major blackouts twice. During the outrage on May 13, around 13 million households across Taiwan were hit by the incident.
Then on May 17, the power plant in Kaohsiung again experienced equipment failure, causing another round of outrage. 4.15 million households were affected.
Two Smugglings in Five Days
In addition, within 5 days, 2 men successfully smuggled themselves to Taiwan in rubber boats, one on May 4, one on April 30.
According to the Kinmen Coastal Patrol, at about 4:50 a.m. on May 4, radar operators found a suspicious light in the sea north of Kinmen and detected a person onboard. Inspectors then seized from the vessel a 20-year-old man surnamed Jiang from China.
The man claimed to be from Guangxi and said he had bought a rubber boat on the Internet and sailed from Xiaodeng Island to Kinmen.
He said the reason for the smuggling was “I just want to come”. The Taiwanese authorities are still investigating the man’s motives for his smuggling attempt.
Five days earlier, on April 30, a mainland man surnamed Zhou also smuggled himself to Taiwan in a military-grade rubber boat with an outboard motor.
He claimed that he had set out from Fujian, China.
His trip to Taiwan was unhindered, going undetected by both Chinese and Taiwanese navy, sea patrol, and shore patrol. He was only found by Taichung port workers and reported to the police two hours after disembarking.
The fact that Zhou could sail to Taiwan without being found or caught has caused concern over Taiwan’s national security.
Yao Cheng, former commander of the CCP’s Naval Command, told NTDTV’s Focus Talk that he thinks the two “smuggling” cases are very suspicious—especially the first one.
He said that right now, because of the highly tense situation in the Taiwan Strait, both the CCP and Taiwan have increased patrol of their coastlines. As a former navy commander, he could hardly imagine that anyone could leave the Chinese coast and sail to the sea without being caught by the CCP’s patrol boats.
Also, the first smuggler is from Sichuan province, an inland province. It would be unlikely for him to have experience sailing alone at sea. It is hard to believe that without a compass, he could rely solely on his cell phone to reach Taiwan.
Jiang Feng, a popular Chinese language YouTuber who has 753 K subscribers, said in his show that he suspected that the CCP could send these two “smugglers” to “test the water”, and to collect hydrology information near the coast of Taiwan, in preparation for a future invasion.
Taiwan Winning Despite Beijing’s ‘Unrestricted War’
About the series of events in Taiwan, Tony Choi, a commentator in Hong Kong said on his show that he had received exclusive information that it was highly possible that the CCP was waging“unrestricted war” against Taiwan.
He said that during a secret meeting between the CCP’s United Front Work Department and the Taiwan Affairs Office, it was suggested that “Taiwan should be dealt with and taught with any means possible.” Choi warned the Taiwanese government and the public to be vigilant because the CCP has no bottom line.
I also interviewed Hsiao-Hui Chao, chairperson of media platform “The Truth Talker Economic Forum”, a former Taiwanese congressional assistant and senior financial reporter about her views on the recent events in Taiwan. She said that although the CCP has indeed waged unrestricted warfare against Taiwan for many years, Taiwan is still winning.
She said that although this wave of COVID-19 outbreaks struck suddenly, the public in Taiwan has demonstrated a high degree of discipline and behaved very rationally. People started to stay home out of their own initiative, and also tried to help one another. The government has been transparent about the situation, and new case numbers are going down after peaking on Monday. She believes Taiwan can continue to do well.
As to the unrestricted warfare, Chao said the CCP has been trying hard to infiltrate Taiwan and spread misinformation to divide Taiwan internally.
However, in recent years, both the government and the public have become more vigilant, and it is not that easy to confuse Taiwanese people any more.
Chao doesn’t think the CCP has the ability to invade Taiwan by force. “Otherwise, why hasn’t the CCP done it already?”
She thinks that, while the Chinese economy is declining in recent years, and China is actually still suffering from the CCP virus, Taiwan has been rising and is attracting more international investments. Because Taiwan shares the same value as the free world, the US, European countries and Japan all feel more comfortable working with Taiwan, and buying products made in Taiwan.
She also hopes that the US government can be more aggressive in cleaning up the CCP’s infiltration of the US, instead of just passively responding to the CCP’s expansion.
Japan Holds High-Level Meeting to Discuss the Chinese Regime Threat Amid Joint Military Drill
Now, let’s move to our next topic.
You might have read the news of Japan, the United States, and France conducting joint military exercises in Japan.
While the exercises were going on, Japan’s most important political party, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) held a high-level meeting on May 12 to discuss how to tackle the threat of the CCP.
The senior members of the LDP, representing both the national defense and the security ministry, discussed various situations at the Senkaku Islands (also known as Diaoyu), the South China Sea, and the Taiwan Strait.
The topics of the meeting were revealed by Takao Toshikawa, a well-known Japanese political and economic commentator, in a Japanese article entitled “Europe Joins Japan, U.S., Australia, and India in ‘Deterrence Strategy Against China’—Its Deep Implications for the Senkaku Islands.”
According to the article, many high profile figures attended the meeting, and Taku Otsuka, member of the House of Representatives of Japan for the LDP in charge of national defense, and Itsunori Onodera, chairman of security investigation and former minister of defense, chaired the meeting.
The topics included the following five areas:
(1) The operations of Chinese Coast Guard vessels in the waters around the Senkaku Islands.
(2) The operations of Chinese naval vessels and helicopters.
(3) The Chinese Maritime Traffic Safety Law.
(4) The Chinese regime’s survey report on the topography of the Senkaku Islands.
(5) The situations in the South China Sea and Taiwan.
Although the article did not disclose more details of the meeting, it revealed that about 50 LDP members from the House and Senate attended the meeting. Other participants included Hiroyuki Onishi, parliamentary vice-minister, Masami Oka, director of the Defense Policy Bureau, and Mitsuko Hayashi, chief advisor to the Ministry of Defense staff office.
Attendees from the Self-Defense Forces included coordinating officials of the land, sea, and air staffs, as well as Deputy Director-General Kazuye Endo of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in charge of Asia Pacific affairs.
It was also revealed that the topics of the meeting were related to France’s participation in the military exercise involving Japan, the United States, and France. The drill started on May 11 and included a military operation exercise to defend the Senkaku Islands in the case of a CCP invasion.
It was the first time that the French army conducted a joint military exercise with the Japanese Self-Defense Forces on Japanese land.
France sent a large fleet of warships to demonstrate its determination to participate in the affairs of the Indo-Pacific region. Admiral Pierre Vandier, chief of the French naval staff, said last November that “Our message will be targeted at China.”
He highlighted the importance of freedom of navigation and respect for international law, and expressed France’s determination to be united with its allies including Japan, the United States, Australia, and India.
In addition, the German government said that it wanted to strengthen its operations in the Indo-Pacific region and for the first time, participated in the 2+2 talks between the foreign and defense ministers of Japan and Germany on April 13 this year.
Japan will also welcome a British aircraft carrier strike group—accompanied by a Dutch warship.
Toshikawa said the strategy of building deterrence against the CCP has gradually won acceptance from European countries such as France. The reason is that the CCP’s expansion of hegemony in the South China and East China Seas has made Japan, the United States, Australia, India, and even France and other European countries feel threatened.
The CCP’s human rights abuses in Hong Kong and Xinjiang are also of deep concern to these countries. So there is a consensus among countries to curb the CCP’s infringement on international rules and human rights issues.
So, it seems that more countries are waking up. The European Parliament just overwhelmingly voted to freeze its investment deal with the CCP. This is definitely a big blow to the CCP’s effort to divide the free world. It succeeded to a certain degree before, with many European countries attracted by the CCP’s money and market. It is good that this time Europe has done something right.
