I have been involved in the Three Gorges Project since 1997. My job ranged from the electrical and mechanical engineering review to the electrical control safety design. I worked there until 2002 when the project was basically completed.

As soon as I got back to my previous workplace, I was told by a colleague who was still at the site that there were cracks in the dam and that they were being connected with huge linking nails. Linking materials and labor would cost hundreds of thousands of yuan. There were many cracks and more were still emerging.

There was no way to salvage the silt and weeds, the boat lift was difficult to get over the dam, and the crane experiment to lift the gate on top of the dam was difficult to finish at the set time.

For most of the projects I reviewed, most of the design and construction companies involved got them by the back door. As soon as I tried to any gate-keeping, the leaders would say, “Don’t be that stubborn. Just let it be.” I’ve had to swallow my concern and opinion and check off many projects. I used to say, “Money spent for nothing, just you wait and see,” and that was my rebuttal.
