Stay the Course on China: An Open Letter to President Trump

Dear President Trump,

Over America’s exceptional history, successive generations have risen to the challenge of protecting and furthering our founding principles, and defeating existential threats to our liberties and those of our allies. Today, our generation is challenged to do the same by a virulent and increasingly dangerous threat to human freedoms – the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) through the nation it misrules:  the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

The Chinese Communists’ stated ambitions are antithetical to America’s strategic interests, and the PRC is increasingly taking actions that imperil the United States and our allies. The past forty years during which America pursued an open policy of “engagement” with the PRC have contributed materially to the incremental erosion of U.S. national security.

This cannot be permitted to continue.

China is not as we wish it to be. In our political system, politics is the norm, and war is the exception. It is explicitly the opposite in the PRC’s worldview. Going forward, we must better understand and deal with this dangerous asymmetry.

We the undersigned, are encouraged by the broad and coherent strategy of robust, alternative policies you have adopted to confront the PRC’s campaign to undermine the national interests of the United States and its allies. We encourage you to stay the course on your path of countering Communist China.

We acknowledge and support your robust National Security Strategy that properly sets forth why the United States must counter the PRC. Opposing the advance of tyranny is fully in keeping with the founding principles of America and our rich heritage of defending freedom and liberty, both at home and, where necessary, abroad.

We note the PRC does not recognize the principles and rules of the existing international order, which under a Pax Americana has enabled the greatest period of peace and global prosperity in mankind’s history. The PRC rejects this order both ideologically and in practice. China’s rulers openly proclaim and insist on a new set of rules to which other nations must conform, such as their efforts to dominate the East and South China Seas and the so-called “Belt and Road Initiative,” with its debt-trap diplomacy, designed to extend such hegemony worldwide. The only persistently defining principle of the CCP is the sustainment and expansion of its power.

Over the past forty years of Sino-American relations, many American foreign policy experts did not accurately assess the PRC’s intentions or attributed the CCP’s reprehensible conduct to the difficulties of governing a country of 1.3 billion people. American policymakers were told time and again by these adherents of the China-engagement school that the PRC would become a “responsible stakeholder” once a sufficient level of economic modernization was achieved. This did not happen and cannot so long as the CCP rules China.

The PRC routinely and systematically suppresses religious freedom and free speech, including the imprisonment of over one million citizens in Xinjiang and the growing suppression of Hong Kong’s autonomy. The PRC also routinely violates its obligations, as it does with the World Trade Organization, freedom of navigation and the protection of coral reefs in the South China Sea. Beijing then demands that its own people and the rest of the world accept their false narratives and justifications, demands aptly termed as “Orwellian nonsense.”

The PRC is not and never has been a peaceful regime. It uses economic and military force – what it calls its “comprehensive national power” – to bully and intimidate others. The PRC threatens to wage war against a free and democratically led Taiwan.

It is expanding its reach around the globe, co-opting our allies and other nations with the promise of economic gain, often with authoritarian capitalism posing as free commerce, corrupt business practices that go-unchecked, state-controlled entities posing as objective academic, scientific or media institutions and trade and development deals that lack reciprocity, transparency and sustainability. The CCP corrupts everything it touches.

This expansionism is not random or ephemeral. It is manifestly the unfolding of the CCP’s grand strategy. The Party’s ambitions have been given many names, most recently the “China Dream,” the “great rejuvenation” of China, or the “Community of Common Destiny.” The “Dream” envisioned by the Communist Party is a nightmare for the Chinese people and the rest of the world.

We firmly support the Chinese people, the vast majority of whom want to live peaceful lives.

But we do not support the Communist government of China, nor its control by the dangerous Xi Jinping clique. We welcome the measures you have taken to confront Xi’s government and selectively to decouple the U.S. economy from China’s insidious efforts to weaken it. No amount of U.S. diplomatic, economic, or military “engagement” will disrupt the CCP’s grand strategy.

If there is any sure guide to diplomatic success, it is that when America leads—other nations follow. If history has taught us anything it is that clarity and commitment of leadership in addressing existential threats, like from the PRC, will be followed by our allies when policy prescriptions such as yours become a reality. The PRC’s immediate strategy is to delay, stall, and otherwise wait out your presidency. Every effort must be made therefore to institutionalize now the policies and capabilities that can rebalance our economic relations with China, strengthen our alliances with like-minded democracies and ultimately to defeat the PRC’s global ambitions to suppress freedom and liberty.

Stay the Course!

Pompeo Announces an International Alliance to Defend Religious Freedom

BY JENNIFER ZENG

July 18, 2019 Updated: July 18, 2019

WASHINGTON—On the last day of the three-day Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom, Vice President Michael Penceand Secretary of State Mike Pompeo each addressed hundreds of ministers, religious leaders, and others from 106 nations, to celebrate the “unalienable rights” of religious freedom, and to “turn convictions to action.” Pompeo announced two new initiatives.

Pence said, “Since the earliest days of our nation, America has stood for religious freedom. Our first settlers left their homes and all they knew for the ‘chance to begin the world over again.’ They carved protections for religious liberty into our founding charters and earliest laws. And after our independence was won, the crafters of America’s constitution enshrined religious liberty as the first of our American freedoms.

“Our Declaration of Independence proclaims that our precious liberties are not the gift of government, but rather they are unalienable rights endowed by our Creator. Americans believe people should live by the dictates of their conscience rather than the diktats of government.”

Pompeo celebrated the growth of the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom in his speech. “I also want to note the remarkable growth in attendance from one year to two. I hope we can keep that trend up. There are hundreds more attendees, and we thank you all for taking time out of your incredibly busy schedules to be part of it.

“It is the largest human rights ministerial ever held at the United States Department of State. It is also—with our country now some 200-plus years old, it is the largest event ever hosted by a U.S. Secretary of State ever. It’s truly remarkable.”

Actions

Both Pence and Pompeo noted that 83 percent of the world’s population live in nations where religious freedom is either threatened or denied entirely. The both said the situation was urgent, without a moment to lose.

Pompeo said that it is time to “turn our convictions into action,” and announced two initiatives.

“First, we’ve put our money where our mouth is.”

Pompeo said that the State Department has established an International Religious Freedom Fund—a multi-donor fund that provides rapid assistance to victims of persecution all throughout the world. “It’s already serving good, and its purpose around the world is expanding.”

Pompeo said since 2017, the United States had provided more than $340 million for vulnerable religious and ethnic communities in Iraq, particularly those that ISIS had targeted for genocide.

“And today, I have the privilege to announce that USAID is providing $27 million in new humanitarian assistance to keep this very progress going,” Pompeo said.

Another initiative is to create an International Religious Freedom Alliance.

“We hope that this new vehicle—the first ever international body devoted to this specific topic—will build on efforts to date and bring like minded countries together to confront challenges of international religious freedom.”

Pompeo said more countries have had or are planning to have similar events to advance religious freedom. Those countries include the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Albania, Colombia, Morocco, and the Vatican.

“And we need to make progress, too, in the world’s multilateral institutions.  Thanks to Poland’s efforts, the UN General Assembly has named August 22nd as a special day to remember the victims of religious persecution.  Please commemorate it in your home countries too,” Pompeo said.

Singling out China

Both Pence and Pompeo singled out China as “home to one of the worst human rights crises of our time.” “It is truly the stain of the century,” Pompeo said.

“The Chinese Communist Party demands control over the lives of the Chinese people and their souls. Chinese Government officials have even discouraged other countries from attending this very gathering,” Pompeo said.

“ If you’re here today and you’re a country which has defied the Chinese pressure to come here, we salute you and we thank you. And if you have declined to attend for the same reason, we took note.”

Pompeo cited the cases of Falun Gong practitioner Chen Huixia and Pastor Wang Yi as examples of religious persecution in China.

“In September of last year, Chen Huixia, a member of the Falun Gong, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison simply for practicing his faith.

“In May of 2018, authorities arrested Wang Yi, the pastor of Early Rain Covenant Church, a large unregistered church in Chengdu, for openly criticizing the government’s controls on religious freedom. He’s still in jail today,” Pompeo said.

Pence noted that although Christian faith is also targeted in China, “but in one of the greatest ironies in the history of Christianity, it is today’s Communist China which is seeing the fastest growth in the Christian faith anywhere in the last 2,000 years.

“Just 70 years ago, when the Communist Party took power, there were fewer than half a million Chinese Christians—yet today, just two generations later, faith in Jesus Christ has reached as many as 130 million Chinese Christians.”

On the second day of the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom, July 17, President Trump met with 27 survivors of religious persecution from 17 countries. Four of them are from China, including Falun Gong practitioner Yuhua Zhang, Uyghur Muslim Jewher Ilham, Tibetan Buddhist Nyima Lhamo, and, Christian Manping Ouyang.

Sanctions

After noting the Iranian regime’s record of denying religious freedom inside and outside the country, Pence mentioned that the United States had placed sanctions on two leaders of the Iranian-backed militias. “The United States will not stand idly by while Iranian-backed militias spread terror,” he said.

Pence said, this week, the United States placed visa sanctions on Burma’s top two military leaders—the commander in chief and his deputy—as well as two commanders of light infantry brigades, for a brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya people that has forced more than 700,000 to flee across the border to Bangladesh.

‘Unmatched Wickedness’ in China Needs Action From All Nations, Says Human Rights Group

BY JENNIFER ZENG

July 17, 2019 Updated: July 17, 2019

WASHINGTON—Setting the stage for 1,000 foreign ministers, religious leaders, and others from 115 nations to gather for the second Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom on July 16–18, researchers and human rights activists said it’s time for nations, organizations, and individuals to take concrete actions to stop the crime against humanity in China of killing people to harvest their organs.

On an Industrial Scale

At a side event of the Ministerial held at the National Press Club on July 15, China Organ Harvest Research Center (COHRC) released a 91-page report that sheds light on “one of the most hideous human rights disasters of the 21st century.”

(L-R) Grace Yin, Founder and Lead Researcher at COHRC, Ann Corson, Editor at COHRC Reports, and Chief Editor, Doctor Against Forced Organ Harvesting Newsletter, and William Boericke, Editor at COHRC Reports, speak at the National Press Club on Latest Developments in China’s On-demand Killing of Prisoners of Conscience for Organs in Washington on July 15, 2019. (Samira Bouaou/The Epoch Times)

The report states, “Unlike black market organ trafficking operations elsewhere in the world, the on-demand killing of prisoners of conscience for organs in China is driven by the state, run on an industrial scale, and carried out by both military and civilian institutions.”

Grace Yin, founder and lead researcher of COHRC, and co-author of the COHRC report, said that after years of researching and studying, it can be established that killing people on demand for their organs has become a large scale “industry.”

The new 2019 COHRC report provides up-to-date evidence and in-depth analysis of the organ sources and victims, as well as the methods and consequences of China’s transplant programs, within the context of international law and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s campaign to eradicate the spiritual practice of Falun Gong.

A Lens to Understand Persecution of All Faiths in China

According to the report’s authors, the CCP’s persecution of Falun Gong is genocide, and, in the face of genocide, the 150 nations that have ratified or acceded to the Genocide Convention should take action.

Furthermore, “Studying the genocide of Falun Gong provides a lens through which the world can understand the persecution of other faiths in China. Addressing the persecution of Falun Gong is a crucial step towards ending religious persecution in China and the atrocities being committed against humanity and morality itself,” the authors of report explain.

In the case of Falun Gong, then-head of the CCP, Jiang Zemin, ordered a campaign in July 1999 to eradicate this spiritual practice, which involves living according to the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance and the practice of meditative exercises.

Jiang feared there were more people who had taken up Falun Gong than were members of the CCP—and he was concerned that the Chinese people would find Falun Gong’s traditional moral teachings more appealing than the CCP’s ideology of materialism and atheism.

An increase in the number of organ transplantations began soon after the persecution of Falun Gong began.

Insufficient Action from International Community

Yin said she hopes the COHRC report will help the world understand the severity, driving forces, and implications of China’s organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience, as well as the persecution of Falun Gong and other faiths in China.

The report is primarily intended to facilitate policymakers’ efforts to shape legislation and formulate policy, to develop effective strategies and measures in response to state-driven crimes, and to support justice and ensure accountability.

The authors of the report cited U.S. Chief Prosecutor Robert H. Jackson’s speech before the International Military Tribunal at the Nuremberg Trials in 1945 to illustrate why the world needs to take action:

“The wrongs which we seek to condemn and punish have been so calculated, so malignant, and so devastating, that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored, because it cannot survive their being repeated.”

Yin said that many people in the world aren’t aware of this crime or its severity, and thus there is insufficient action from the international community to stop these atrocities.

Joint Statement Calls on US to Take Action

Four organizations at the event, including COHRC, International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China (ETAC), Human Rights Law Foundation (HRLF), and Citizen Power Initiatives for China (CPIC) released a joint statement, which called on the United States to take action.

“We call on the United States Government to condemn the persecution of Falun Gong and other religious groups in China, call for an end to this most hideous of human rights disasters in the modern era, and prevent American individuals and institutions from becoming complicit in this crime against humanity,” according to the statement.

Yang Jianli, president and founder of CPIC, read the statement during the event and said it’s open to all organizations and individuals to co-sign.

Final Judgement of China Tribunal

The press release for the COHRC event quoted the final judgement report of the China Tribunal, which said organ harvesting was an “unmatched evil.” Discussion at the COHRC event often focused on the China Tribunal report.

On June 17, the China Tribunal, led by Geoffrey Nice, who prosecuted Slobodan Milosevic, delivered its report in London.

The judgment states, “The Tribunal’s members are certain—unanimously, and sure beyond reasonable doubt—that in China forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience has been practiced for a substantial period of time involving a very substantial number of victims.”

Calls for action are listed at the end of the judgment: “Finally—on actions to be taken—assuming Governments do not do as it might be thought they should, the usually powerless citizen is, in the internet age, more powerful than s/he may recognise. Criminality of the order revealed may allow individuals from around the world to act jointly in pressurising governments so that those governments and other international bodies are unable not to act.”

The judgment reminds “governments and any who interact in any substantial way with the PRC should now recognise that they are, to the extent revealed above, interacting with a criminal state.”

It lists the following actors: doctors and medical institutions; industry and businesses, most specifically airlines, travel companies, financial services businesses, law firms, and pharmaceutical and insurance companies together with individual tourists; educational establishments; and arts establishments.

Actions to Take

Louisa Greve, a member of the ETAC International Advisory Committee and director of External Affairs, Uyghur Human Rights Project, said that apart from pushing the U.S. Congress to do more, initiatives should be launched to approach individual institutions and universities that still cooperate with China in organ transplantation, or training doctors for China.

(Samira Bouaou/The Epoch Times)

Greve said other things could be done, including pushing medical institutions to reject articles of Chinese transplant surgeons if the organ sources are not transparent. “Deny them prestige,” she said.

“The other part is denying money. If they can’t have prestigious appointments, prestigious training sessions, then they may somehow lose out against other international medical practitioners for consulting fees, whatever it is. ”

Actions are needed, not only to preserve the system, but also ethics, Greve said. “If you have an ethics system, you can’t just say, ‘It works for us, but we don’t care about ethics as long as it’s China.’”

Benedict Rogers, East Asia team leader for Christian Solidarity Worldwide and co-founder and deputy chair of the UK Conservative Party’s Human Rights Commission, said more countries should be encouraged to learn from countries that have already banned their citizens from going to China to buy organs. More countries should pass legislation to ban organ tourism.

“Another thing we should also be doing is increasingly exploring mechanisms for accountability and talking about the criminality of the Chinese state for two reasons.

“The first is, we all know of course, that it’s going to be extremely difficult to actually get a prosecution in any of the international institutions … But just talking about a prosecution may scare people in the Chinese regime.”

Second, if many nations can work together and start talking about the criminality of the Chinese state, that can also have some effect, Rogers said.

Rogers said people also should use the China Tribunal’s judgment wisely to stop the atrocity.

“I think the most important thing is to make it widely known, and to make sure that governments are aware of the judgment and respond to it.”

The panel of the China Tribunal was a very distinguished and eminent one, Rogers said. None of the members had any previous agenda with organ harvesting, China, or Falun Gong. Given the high caliber of such a panel, governments around the world should take its judgment seriously and use it as a starting point for further investigation.

Yang said there are two other things that can be done: one is to collect information about individuals who are involved in forced organ harvesting, another is to spread the message into China, and let family members of prisoners of conscience become aware of the danger. If they can seek information about their imprisoned family members, that can also put some pressure on the prisons and camps.

今天就跟大家講講我煉功初期的三個小故事,也許能幫助大家理解,面對中共最殘酷的打壓,法輪功爲何能屹立不倒。

Anniversary Day 二十一週年紀念日

Today could be the last time for me to do Falun Dafa (falundafa.org) exercises in this park for a while. Will miss this place and my fellow practitioners here. Taken on 7/15/2018

今天是我修煉法輪大法21週年,也可能是我在一段時間內最後一次在這個公園煉功,所以照個相紀念一下。

Losing Weight=Controling Your Desires 減肥心得

In the past three weeks, I successfully lost 3.5 pounds. Not too much, but am on the right track. 過去三週中,我成功減掉三磅半。不是太多,但方向是正確的。

For me, as I don’t want to spend time to do physical exercises (except for the Falun Gong exercises I am doing daily, which are very gentle and slow, and won’t burn much calorie) , the only way to lose wight is to eat less. 因我不想花時間運動(除了每天煉法輪功外。但法輪功的動作都是緩、慢、圓的,消耗不了多少熱量),唯一的減肥方法就是少吃。

So, the success relies on whether I can control my desire to eat more, whether I can get rid of the fear for being afraid of being hungry. As I am already overweight, I should believe that starve myself a little bit won’t kill me. Instead, my fat will be burnt to offer me the necessary energy I need.

So, keep up the effort. I do believe people should be responsible for their own appearance after they turn 40. To be able to control one’s weight is a manifestation of one’s willpower. And I decide to be a person with strong willpower. 寫這個帖子,就是想監督鼓勵自己堅持下去。林肯說,一個人過了四十歲,就要對自己的外貌負責了。我覺得是這麼回事。能不能管理好自己的身材,是一個人意志力的體現。

My willpower is not strong enough yet, I need to strengthen it more. 我的意志力還不夠強,所以需要繼續努力。
