Private screening shows ‘Free China: Courage to Believe’

A small group gathered in the basement of the Port Jervis Free Library on Jan. 12 for a private screening of “Free China: The Courage to Believe.”

The documentary about persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China is unavailable for public screenings because of contractual limitations, but private screenings are encouraged, according to presenter John Zhu.

Zhu is a volunteer with New Tang Dynasty (NTD) TV, a New York City Chinese television station, which, according to literature Zhu provided, was formed by Chinese-Americans to counter Chinese media censorship.

NTDTV disclosed the epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in China in 2003, and in 2008 it reported the Chinese milk scandal weeks before the Chinese acknowledged their milk was tainted with melamine and was sickening children.

And now “Free China,” made by Michael Perlman, who also made “Tibet: Beyond Fear,” may cause Americans hesitation about buying Homer Simpson slippers, SG footwear, and “made in China” stuffed rabbits, Christmas lights, scarves, hats, and hand-knit sweaters.

The films’ subjects, Jennifer Zeng and Charles Lee, describe how they found themselves in Chinese “re-education camps,” where many Falun Gong practitioners have been imprisoned, some of the 4 million prisoners making these items for negligible compensation.

The film included footage showing starving prisoners looking much like concentration camp victims. And subjects told of organ harvesting from living prisoners for organ transplant.

“They’re like lobsters in a tank,” said Zeng. “Thousands are killed for their organs.”

Their stories resemble those told by Port Jervis residents Celia Ou and her sister-in-law, Liang Zi Hui.

Hui said, via Ou’s translation, that she spent several years in such a camp. And now her husband has been mysteriously imprisoned.

Ou said she had heard recently from a woman in China, formerly a government employee, that her brother-in-law, arrested weeks ago, is now in a “brainwashing camp,” where “physical and mental torture happens behind closed doors.”

The film’s narrator explains that Falun Gong was initially tolerated in China, as it supported healthy practices and attitudes. But when the numbers exceeded membership in the Communist Party, in 1999, the party began banning books and imprisoning practitioners, including Jennifer Zheng.

She eventually recanted her belief in Falun Gong to gain her freedom. The family escaped to Australia, and Zeng wrote a book about her experience, “Witness to History.”

Global Grassroots Movement Honors US Rep. Rohrabacher

BY JENNIFER ZENG

December 6, 2018 Updated: December 6, 2018Share

WASHINGTON—Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) received an appreciation award on Dec. 4 honoring his years of support for one of the world’s largest grassroots movements—Tuidang, the global campaign for quitting the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Yi Rong, president of the Global Service Center for Quitting the Chinese Communist Party, presented the award plaque to Rohrabacher in Washington.

As part of the movement, millions of people inside and outside China have submitted their resignations from the CCP to the global Tuidang center. As of Dec. 6, more than 321 million Chinese people have published their declarations to quit the Party and its affiliated organizations on the Tuidang website.

“On behalf of our global volunteers, I’d like to express our sincere thanks to Mr. Dana Rohrabacher, who introduced the House Resolution 932, and express our thanks to Congress for showing solidarity with the Tuidang movement,” Yi said.

On June 8, Rohrabacher introduced House Resolution 932 in Congress. The resolution expresses “solidarity with the Tuidang Movement whereby Chinese citizens renounce their ties to the Chinese Communist Party and its affiliates” and calls for an “immediate end to the campaign to persecute Falun Gong practitioners.”

The Tuidang movement is a grassroots response to the CCP’s ruthless 19-year campaign to eradicate Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa—a traditional spiritual practice that combines tranquil exercises with a way of life based on the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.

Rohrabacher said that from his lifelong experience of fighting for freedom, he knew that people who are struggling for freedom throughout the world are America’s greatest allies for peace and prosperity.

“I should be giving this award to you,” he said. “I would say the Falun Gong and the Tuidang movement have been such a great inspiration to me over the years.”

Referring to China’s ruling communist regime as the world’s most “repressive” and “corrupt,” Rohrabacher said: “They are villains in the world. They are villains for the planet. And those villains threaten all of us with their power and authority.”

Rohrabacher said the iron grip of the CCP puts all of us in jeopardy, and could lead to war. However, the Chinese people, in engaging with the peaceful Tuidang movement that has led to the withdrawal of one-third of the CCP’s membership, may help prevent open conflicts.

“The people of China are our greatest ally, in trying to make sure that the villainous regime doesn’t go to war, physical war, with the people of the United States,” Rohrabacher said.

“You are the ones who gave me hope, to realize that there are people in China, and everywhere, that we can ally ourselves with.”

In June 2016, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a resolution demanding an end to the persecution of Falun Gong, condemning the practice of forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience in China—including practitioners of Falun Gong and members of other religious and ethnic minority groups—and calling for an investigation of China’s unethical organ transplant industry.

Top China Experts Make Profound Turnabout, From Engagement to Vigilance

BY
JENNIFER ZENG

December 3, 2018 Updated: December 3, 2018

WASHINGTON—Thirty-two of the world’s top experts on China, some of whom favored engaging the country before, have now joined forces in expressing their concerns about the Chinese Communist Party’s influence operations in the United States. They are calling for “constructive vigilance.”

Releasing a 200-page report, “Chinese Influence and American Interests: Promoting Constructive Vigilance,” at the Hoover Institution in Washington on Nov. 29, the authors write of the “disillusionment of an entire generation of China specialists” and a profound turnabout.

The report was assembled by Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society, and “comprises the most comprehensive study of China’s influence operations in the United States to date,” according to John Pomfreta member of the Working Group on Chinese Influence Activities in the United States.

Larry Diamond, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, who hosted the panel discussion at the report’s release, said in his opening remarks, “Around the world, countries have been waking up, not only to China’s rising global power, to its transparent and legitimate use—many countries do it around the world—of traditional soft power means, but to another form of power projection, which the National Endowment for Democracy has called ‘sharp power.’”

Diamond said former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s words, “covert, coercive, and corrupting,” could best describe this form of power.

The report comprehensively examines the Chinese influence in Congress, state and local governments, the Chinese American community, universities, think tanks, media, corporations, and technology and research. It also gives long lists of Chinese influence-operation bureaucracies and Chinese influence activities in select countries, as well as a picture of the Chinese-language media landscape.

“While Americans are well acquainted with China’s quest for influence through the projection of diplomatic, economic, and military power, we are less aware of the myriad ways that Beijing has more recently been seeking cultural and informational influence, some of which could undermine our democratic processes,” the report says.

The report finds that “China’s influence activities have moved beyond their traditional United Front focus on diaspora communities to target a far broader range of sectors in Western societies, ranging from think tanks, universities, and media to state, local, and national government institutions.”

Among the report’s findings:

• “The Chinese Communist party-state leverages a broad range of party, state, and non-state actors to advance its influence-seeking objectives, and in recent years, it has significantly accelerated both its investment and the intensity of these efforts.”

• “In American federal and state politics, China seeks to identify and cultivate rising politicians.”

• “On university campuses, Confucius Institutes (CIs) provide the Chinese government access to US student bodies…With the direct support of the Chinese embassy and consulates, Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSAs) sometimes report on and compromise the academic freedom of other Chinese students and American faculty on American campuses.”

• “At think tanks, researchers, scholars, and other staffers report regular attempts by Chinese diplomats and other intermediaries to influence their activities within the United States.”

• “In business, China often uses its companies to advance strategic objectives abroad, gaining political influence and access to critical infrastructure and technology.”

• “In the American media, China has all but eliminated the plethora of independent Chinese-language media outlets that once served Chinese American communities.’

• “Among the Chinese American community, China has long sought to influence—even silence—voices critical of the PRC or supportive of Taiwan.”

• “In the technology sector, China is engaged in a multifaceted effort to misappropriate technologies it deems critical to its economic and military success. Beyond economic espionage, theft, and the forced technology transfers that are required of many joint venture partnerships, China also captures much valuable new technology through its investments in U.S. high-tech companies and through its exploitation of the openness of American university labs.”

• “Around the world, China’s influence-seeking activities in the United States are mirrored in different forms in many other countries.”

Toward “constructive vigilance,” “the Working Group has sought to strike a balance between passivity and overreaction,” and promotes “transparency,” “integrity,” and “reciprocity” as key principles to deal with the challenges involved in relating to China.

Winston Lord, a former U.S. ambassador to China, said with all that Beijing has been doing, the Trump administration has correctly labeled the U.S.-China relation as “strategic competition.” He endorsed the administration’s “sensible” push back steps, including stepping up the maritime patrols in the East and South China Seas and Taiwan Strait, the BUILD program promoting development finance, working with Australia and Japan on development in the region, efforts to counter forced technology transfers, IP theft, subsidies of Chinese companies, and the advanced technology challenge, and other measures.

Most noteworthy in this report is that many of the contributors have been leading advocates of the policy of engagement—the belief that trade with China would lead to its becoming a freer, more democratic nation.

These include Lord, who accompanied Henry Kissinger on his secret 1971 trip to Beijing that paved the way for an new era for U.S.-China relations; Orville Schell, a longtime China observer, author, journalist, and a former dean and professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and Evan Medeiros, a senior director for Asia at the National Security Council in the Obama administration.

“It’s not as though this is a bunch of hostile, anti-Chinese people,” Lord said. “Yet all of us have become more pessimistic about the trends and feel that we’re at a crossroads in the relationship.”

REMARKS BY PRESIDENT TRUMP IN PRESS GAGGLE ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE

Aboard Air Force One
En Route Joint Base Andrews

 Saturday, December 1, 2018

11:23 P.M. AST

(Air Force One)

THE PRESIDENT:  It’s an incredible deal.  It goes down, certainly — if it happens, it goes down as one of the largest deals ever made.  It’s a deal between the United States and China made by the President and the President.  And it’ll have an incredibly positive impact on farming, meaning agriculture, industrial products, computers — every type of product.

And what I’d be doing is holding back on tariffs.  China will be opening up.  China will be getting rid of tariffs.  You know, China right now has major trade barriers — they’re major tariffs — and also major non-tariff barriers, which are brutal.  China will be getting rid of many of them.  And China will be buying massive amounts of product from us, including agricultural from our farmers — tremendous amount of agricultural and other products.
So it’s been really something.  You may also want to say that the President has agreed that if the Qualcomm deal that they rejected — which was one of the larger deals of its kind, which China rejected — if that deal came back to him, he would most likely approve it quickly, which is a big thing.

And North Korea, which we didn’t get into, we’ve agreed that we will work very strongly on North Korea.  I have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un.  And we will — and don’t forget, we’ve been doing that for what — six, seven months?  Not a long time.  People have been working on that one for 80 years, right?  From the beginning.  And 20 years with the nuclear — you know, if you just take the nuclear.  But he is agreeing to work with me 100 percent on North Korea, and that’s a big thing, too.

So you add the fentanyl along with — because what he will be doing to fentanyl could be a game changer for the United States and what fentanyl is doing to our country in terms of killing people.  Because he’s agreed to put it at the highest level of crime in his country.  Therefore, if they get caught, they have the highest level of punishment.  That could be a game changer.  That’s a big — to me, that’s a very big thing.

Q    What about a summit with Kim Jong Un?  You talked about North Korea.  When will the summit with Kim be?  And did you talk about that with him?

THE PRESIDENT:  We’re going to do one fairly — you know, into January, February, I think.  We’re getting along very well.  We have a good relationship.

Q    Do you think you’ll have him come to the U.S.?

THE PRESIDENT:  At some point, yeah.

Q    Where will January or February be?

     THE PRESIDENT:  Who?

Q    You said January or February.  Where do you see —

THE PRESIDENT:  We have actually talked about three sites.  We haven’t determined the sites.

Q    Regionally, can you tell us about that?  (Inaudible) Asia?

THE PRESIDENT:  Within plane distance.  This is — this plane —

     Q    His plane or —

THE PRESIDENT:  This sucker flies — by the way, what we’re doing with this plane is, Peter —

Come on up here.  So, what we’re doing — he was at the meeting and you thought it was pretty good?

     SECRETARY MNUCHIN:  Fabulous.  Very impressive.

THE PRESIDENT:  So what we’re doing with the plane — we land, and then they come in and these are great people that run these aircraft.  They are unbelievable.  And they’re taking apart — I don’t think this section.  The section up front, they’re taking all of the seats out.  They’re putting — and we’re taking — we’re sending the plane — this plane to Houston.  And it picks up the casket — President Bush — which is good.

Q    Is there any chance we can get the NAFTA termination stuff on the record?

THE PRESIDENT:  Ready?  I will be formally terminating NAFTA shortly.  Just so you understand, when I do that, if for any reason we’re unable to make the deal, that’s (inaudible) — because Congress, then Congress will have a choice of approving the USMCA, which is a phenomenal deal.  Much, much better than NAFTA.  A great deal.

(The President speaks off the record.)

So we’ll be terminating NAFTA in the not-too-distant future.  We are delaying it.

(The President speaks off the record.)

Q    Can we say this is a six-month termination?

THE PRESIDENT:  Say that it’s a six-month term, and I’ll be — I’ll be terminating it within a relatively short period of time.  We get rid of NAFTA.  It’s been a disaster for the United States.  It’s caused us tremendous amounts of unemployment and loss and company loss and everything else.  That’ll be terminated.

And so Congress will have a choice of the USMCA or pre-NAFTA, which worked very well.  You got out, you negotiate your deals.  It worked very well.  Okay?

     Thank you.

(The President is asked a question referencing an off-the-record remark.)

THE PRESIDENT:  Well, let’s leave that.

But we — if they come to me, which they already have, and they said, “You know, Mr. President…”

     Q    Who is “they”?

THE PRESIDENT:  “They.”  People that are in Congress.  The folks.  The folks that you know better than I even know them, okay.

No, if they come — which they have — to talk about an extension because of President Bush’s passing, I would absolutely consider it and probably give it.

     Thank you everybody.

Statement from the Press Secretary Regarding The President’s Working Dinner With China

The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and President Xi Jinping of China, have just concluded what both have said was a “highly successful meeting” between themselves and their most senior representatives in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Very importantly, President Xi, in a wonderful humanitarian gesture, has agreed to designate Fentanyl as a Controlled Substance, meaning that people selling Fentanyl to the United States will be subject to China’s maximum penalty under the law.

On Trade, President Trump has agreed that on January 1, 2019, he will leave the tariffs on $200 billion worth of product at the 10% rate, and not raise it to 25% at this time. China will agree to purchase a not yet agreed upon, but very substantial, amount of agricultural, energy, industrial, and other product from the United States to reduce the trade imbalance between our two countries. China has agreed to start purchasing agricultural product from our farmers immediately.

President Trump and President Xi have agreed to immediately begin negotiations on structural changes with respect to forced technology transfer, intellectual property protection, non-tariff barriers, cyber intrusions and cyber theft, services and agriculture. Both parties agree that they will endeavor to have this transaction completed within the next 90 days. If at the end of this period of time, the parties are unable to reach an agreement, the 10% tariffs will be raised to 25%.

It was also agreed that great progress has been made with respect to North Korea and that President Trump, together with President Xi, will strive, along with Chairman Kim Jong Un, to see a nuclear free Korean Peninsula. President Trump expressed his friendship and respect for Chairman Kim.

President Xi also stated that he is open to approving the previously unapproved Qualcomm-NXP deal should it again be presented to him.

President Trump stated: “This was an amazing and productive meeting with unlimited possibilities for both the United States and China. It is my great honor to be working with President Xi.”
