Documenting the Persecution: Videos of Torture Victims Smuggled Out of Chinese Prison

BY JENNIFER ZENG

May 21, 2019 Updated: May 21, 2019

Warning: this article contains graphic images of a torture victim.

Since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, astonishing accounts of torture inside Chinese labor camps, detention centers, and jails have been reported, but taking photos or video footage inside these places has never been possible, much less smuggling such material out of them.

A Falun Gong practitioner named Yu Ming changed this.

He took footage inside Masanjia labor camp and Benxi Prison, and also managed to smuggle the video out.

In Benxi Prison, Yu documented with his hidden video cameras the deaths of two practitioners due to torture. This is their story.

Benxi Prison shot with a hidden camera from inside by Yu Ming in 2017:

Hu Guojian’s Death

In 2017, Yu was detained in the hospital of Benxi Prison in Liaoning Province for practicing Falun Gong. This was his fourth imprisonment. There he would meet fellow practitioner Hu Guojian, both swept up by the persecution.

Benxi Prison shot with a hidden camera from inside by Yu Ming in 2017:

Falun Gong, also know as Falun Dafa, was first introduced to the public in China in 1992 and spread rapidly by word of mouth. A traditional spiritual practice, Falun Gong involves living according to the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance and practicing five sets of meditative exercises.

The then-head of the Chinese Communist Party, Jiang Zemin, feared the popularity of Falun Gong and in particular how its traditional moral teachings might prove more attractive to the Chinese people than the CCP’s atheist and materialist ideology.

In July 1999, Jiang ordered a campaign to eradicate the practice.

A shot panning from Yu Ming to Hu Guojian in his hospital bed:

Hu Guojian, a 45 year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Fushun City in northeastern China’s Liaoning Province was arrested on July 7, 2015, five years after he was released from a ten-year imprisonment.  This time he was sentenced to four years in prison.

On May 4, 2016, Hu was transferred to Benxi Prison, where he was subject to hard labor, sleep deprivation, and lack of food. When his wife visited him 19 days later on, she was alarmed to find that he had lost one-third of his weight, from more than 200 pounds to less than 110 pounds.

Footage shot in 2017 in Benxi Prison hospital showing Hu in his hospital bed:

On May 26, Hu was taken to the washroom by inmate-in-charge Wang Xingang, and inmates Yuan Dejia and Yu Changlong. They stripped off Hu’s clothing, poured icy cold water on top of his head repeatedly, then forced him to sit on a small bench and did not allow him to sleep.

At about 10:00 pm, Hu lost consciousness and fell to the ground. The inmates kicked his head and berated him harshly.

Footage shot in 2017 in Benxi Prison hospital showing Hu lying in coma:

When this did not revive him, he was rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a severe brain hemorrhage that required neurosurgery.

Hu lapsed into a coma, only 22 days after his transfer to Benxi Prison. He never regained consciousness.

After eight months in the hospital, despite his vegetative state, Hu was discharged and taken back to the prison to finish his term.

Footage shot in 2016 at Benxi Central Hospital showing Hu Guojian cuffed to the bed while in coma:

It was at this stage when Yu was able to secretly shoot some footage of Hu lying in bed in a coma.

After serving his 4-year term, Yu was released on Oct. 31, 2017. He started contacting Hu’s family and tried to seek justice for Hu.

Footage shot on May 14, 2018 with a hidden camera inside Benxi Central Hospital, showing  Hu’s family crying in the hospital:

Early morning on May 14, 2018, Hu’s family was suddenly notified by the prison authorities that Hu was in a critical condition, and had been sent back to Benxi Central Hospital.

It was already noontime when Hu’s family reached the hospital, together with Yu. Yu started to secretly shoot footage as soon as they arrived. He understood the importance of video-documenting everything.

There were more than a dozen policemen at the scene. Eventually they found out that Yu was video recording.

They were angry and immediately wanted to confiscate Yu’s hidden camera. As Yu tried hard to hold on the camera, his hands started bleeding as the grabbing and holding on became too fierce. In the end he had to let go.

Footage shot on May 14, 2018 with a hidden camera inside Benxi Central Hospital, showing Hu Guojian’s family crying:

What the police didn’t find out though, was that Yu actually had two hidden cameras on him. The police found and took away the one clipped on his shirt; but failed to notice another one on his waist.

Hours after his family’s arrival at the hospital, Hu died, at the age of 48 years old.

To this day his body is still frozen and stored in the mortuary. His family has refused to cremate the body, believing that this should be kept as evidence to show that his death was caused by the beating in Benxi Prison. They want to seek justice.

The authorities once offered to pay Hu’s family 100,000 yuan ($14,866) to “settle” this matter and have Hu’s body cremated. But his family declined.

Yu said that Hu’s family has been suffering tremendously since Hu’s death. His mother was so upset that her cerebrovascular disease became worse, and she became paraplegic. His son is studying in university. His wife doesn’t have a full-time job, and has had a very difficult time supporting the entire family.

Hu’s mother had to be sent to a nursing home, and often wanted to commit suicide, as she didn’t want to be such a burden to Hu’s wife.

Lu Yuanfeng’s Death

Yu also documented the torture-induced death of Lu Yuanfeng.

Yu met Lu, a 62-year-old farmer from Daxing Village in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, also at the hospital of Benxi Prison towards the end of 2016.

Lu had just been tortured very severely, including being shocked for 45 minutes with high-voltage electric shock clubs and being placed in solitary confinement. After the doctor found that he had dangerously high blood pressure, he was sent to the hospital.

After learning about Lu’s situation, Yu suggested that Lu write down the process of his torture, and make a formal complaint against his torturers, which he did.

ID card, Handwritten Letter, and a photo of Lu Yuanfeng:

In his hand written complaint against Jia Changhai (police ID number: 2151227), head of the Education and Discipline Brigade of No. 2 Ward of Benxi Prison, Lu wrote:

“At 10:00 am on Nov. 9, 2016, Defendant Jia Changhai ordered inmate Wang Kebin to bring me to the Education and Discipline Office of the No. 2 Ward. After I entered the office, Jia Changhai asked me whether I still believed in Falun Gong. I said yes. Then Jia Changhai and another police guard, Niu Dai, cuffed my hands behind my back, pressed me down on the ground, and shocked my back, chest, head and hands for more than ten minutes until the battery ran out. I suffered from continuous heartache; my back was hurt. During the whole process, Niu had been stepping on my head.”

After writing the complaint letter, Lu broke the ballpoint pen, shook out its ink, pressed his thumb onto the ink and then fingerprinted the letter so that it was “legally” and officially signed, according to Chinese tradition.

As a matter of fact, Lu was shocked for another 35 minutes until the battery wore down on the third baton on that day. After he finally agreed to renounce Falun Gong, Jia stopped the torture. Niu never lifted his foot from Lu’s head during the entire 45-minute ordeal.

Lu stayed in the prison hospital for only 10 days before he was taken back and continued to be tortured and forced to do hard labor.

On Aug. 26, 2017, Lu had a stroke and fell, breaking his legs. The prison sent him to an outside hospital for an x-ray but took him back without seeking any further medical treatment.

When Lu was released on Nov. 19, 2017, his condition was so bad that he was virtually paralyzed with broken legs and dull-looking eyesight. Also, he could no longer speak properly.

21 days later, Lu died at home, at the age of 63.

Benxi Prison shot with a hidden camera by Yu Ming:

Yu managed to have Lu’s complaint letter smuggled out of the jail while still in prison, as it was not safe to keep the letter there. After Yu was released, 20 days prior to Lu’s release, he managed to get back Lu’s letter from where it had been hidden. Then he started trying to contact Lu’s family, to see if anything could be done regarding bringing to justice the police guards who tortured Lu.

As he did not have Lu’s contact information, it took him quite a while to find out Lu’s address.

However, he arrived at Lu’s home only to find that Lu had just died.

“I can hardly describe how I felt then,” Yu said. “Apart from these two deaths that I had managed to document with videos, there were more than a dozen Falun Gong practitioners around me who had been tortured to death during the persecution. How many more lives do we have to lose before the killing is stopped?”

Individuals who were killed in China by the regime for their belief in Falun Gong. The website Minghui.org, which serves as a clearinghouse for information about the persecution of Falun Gong, has confirmed 68 deaths of Falun Gong practitioners from persecution in 2018. The true number is thought to be higher, due to the difficulty of getting information out of China. (Minghui.org)

(The College of Physicians of Philadelphia)發表了「使用囚犯遺體做器官來源的道德倫理問題(The Ethics of Using Prisoners as Sources of Cadaver Organs)」的學術演講時說:

Chinese Netizens Have Fun With the Trade War

BY JENNIFER ZENG

May 20, 2019 Updated: May 20, 2019

In communist countries, humor has been a weapon wielded by ordinary people to tell the truth in an environment filled with lies and to snatch some wry enjoyment, and even a measure of revenge, from ridiculing their masters.

When President Donald Trump responded with major new tariffs after Beijing backed out of a trade deal, netizens were ready to mock them in Chinese in posts that appeared on social media outside China, which those inside China can reach using special software.

One widely circulated dialogue vividly describes the back-and-forth nature of trade negotiations between the United States and China:

How the U.S.-China Trade Talks Evolved

Trump: $10.

Vice Premier Liu He: $5.

Trump: $10.

Liu: $6.

Trump: $10.

Liu: $7.

Trump: $10.

Liu: $8.

Trump: $10.

Liu: $9.

Trump: Deal.

New China negotiator: $5.

Trump: $25!!!

People who have closely followed the trade talks can’t help but laugh at how this accurately summarizes the whole process.

Another joke goes like this:

“When do you think this feces-stirring stick of America will stop stirring?”

“When there are no more feces in the world!”

“Feces-stirring stick” in Chinese is used to refer to troublemakers in a very negative way, and in the Chinese Communist official media, the United States is often portrayed as a bully and a troublemaker. However, the author of this dialogue showed the problem wasn’t the “troublemaker,” but the trouble that had to be dealt with.

Here’s a third joke.

“How is the trade war affecting us?”

“It causes us to stand in the middle of the river, without being able to reach the other shore.”

“Why?”

“Because all the stones have been lifted by the Americans to smash their own feet, so there are no more stones in the river for us to ‘cross the river by groping for the stones.’”

This dialogue not only ridicules the Chinese official propaganda about the trade war, but also former paramount leader Deng Xiaoping’s famous description of China’s “openness and reform” policy—the policy meant to bring a more capitalist economy to China. Deng said implementing this policy would be like “crossing the river by groping for the stones.”

When the Trump administration first started to place tariffs on Chinese goods last year, Chinese official media said that by waging a trade war against the Chinese, “Americans are only lifting stones to smash their own feet.”

“China will win big, if it is a big war; China will win medium, if it is a medium-sized war; China will win small, if it is a small war,” the state-run media said.

A fourth joke goes like this:

“I heard that Huawei has lost the case about the 5G patent, and has to pay 300 billion in patent licensing fees per year. Why did Huawei lose that case?”

“Because there isn’t a Party branch in that court.”

This obviously mocks how Huawei has the Communist Party’s full support, but also how in China, all the courts must listen to the Communist Party’s orders.

In another post circulated on Facebook:

“I hope we can start a war with the United States immediately. If we win, America will be ours, and we won’t need a visa to travel to the United States anymore.

“If we lose, it is even better. We can become American citizens directly and enjoy the rights and benefits that a human being is entitled to.

“When will the war start? We ordinary Chinese people just cannot wait any longer!”

As for the Chinese propaganda that China will adopt “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth” policy to retaliate against U.S. tariffs, Chinese netizens cleverly changed “a tooth for a tooth” to “a sprout for a tooth,” as in Chinese, the pronunciation of “sprout” and “tooth” is the same, which is “ya.”

With this clever twist of words, the Chinese netizens mock how the Chinese Communist Party isn’t really able to retaliate against the United States, given its weak economic situation, its dependence on the U.S. market and U.S. technology, and the huge trade imbalance between the United States and China.

One meme  was created based on a famous CCP propaganda image depicting Chairman Mao as the “great savior” of Chinese people. But Mao’s photo is replaced with Trump’s, with a Chinese slogan saying, “Trump Is the Great Savior of the Chinese People.” With a careful look, one can see in the image a very typical “revolutionary peasant” woman, holding a sign that says “We Love Trump.”

Chinese netizens are also creating memes based on official propaganda images, and rewriting the lyrics of official propaganda songs to praise Trump saying that “Trump Is the Great Savior of the Chinese People,” “World Peace Relies on Trump,” and similar kinds of rewrites.

Congressional Hearing Considers Smart Competition With China

BY JENNIFER ZENG

May 14, 2019 Updated: May 14, 2019

WASHINGTON—In a sign of the significance with which Congress is now regarding matters relating to China, over twenty members of the House of Representatives attended a recent Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing, making statements and asking probing questions. While part of the hearing was retrospective, looking at past relations, the urgent question was how the United States should deal with China today.

In his opening remarks at the hearing on Smart Competition: Adapting U.S. Strategy Toward China at 40 Years on May 8, Chairman Eliot L. Engel (D-N.Y.) said, the United States facilitated China’s rise by allowing it to join the World Trade Organization in 2001.

This opened the Chinese market and helped bring the country into the world economy. “American firms and venture capital have flowed into China over the years—including in the Chinese technology market, which has become a matter of a strategic concern for our government today,” Engel said.

“The United States made a gamble that as China became more and more involved on the global stage, it would open up domestically and become a constructive stakeholder in the international system.

“It is pretty clear that gamble hasn’t paid off in the way we hoped it would.”

Engel said there is no question that China is a determined actor that doesn’t share America’s fundamental values; and he is pleased that the Trump Administration’s National Security Strategy identified China as a competitor and Chinese influence globally as a challenge that must be prioritized.

Engel said a smart competition with China should start with investment “here at home to make the United States more competitive.”

On the Brink

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) said that when a Roman leader made a political mistake, and was on the wrong side, he would get into a warm bath with wine and luxurious soft music, to relax and be comfortable for a wonderful hour. “We are at that hour,” Sherman said.

“We are comfortable surrounded by luxuries and $600 billion dollars worth of goods more than we actually produce. That’s our trade deficit. We hear the soft music of economists telling us not to worry about the trade deficit. And in an hour we will expire.”

Sherman said the United States is “eyeball to eyeball” with China. “They think they’ll win because their political system is stronger. They believe that if they lose a trillion dollars in GDP, and we lose a billion dollars in GDP, we will fold; that they have the unity and patriotism to persevere and that we have division, self-interest, and no willingness to endure even the slightest pain to achieve victory. ”

Sherman said the United States has to be prepared to win a trade war against China. “We will avoid that war and win if China thinks we will win. They now think we would lose. We can’t win a trade war with China if we don’t have a plan to deal with a sharp decline in Sino-US trade,” he said.

‘Anywhere But China’

Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) said that the Chinese Communist leader thinks that the era of China has arrived; and China wants to take the world’s center stage.

“They steal intellectual property from corn seeds to computer technology. Huawei came to my university and wanted to fund 100 percent a cyber security program,” Yoho said.

“We’re already naive, but not stupid. You know, they have an aggressive path forward, and their goal is to build five new deep-water aircraft carriers by 2030. And I bet they do. Yet we have fed this monster—I don’t want to call them an enemy—we have fed this economy by allowing our manufacturers to go over there, and it’s time for America to wake up.”

Yoho said America should adopt an “ABC” manufacturing policy and defeat China economically.

“We need to have a policy called the ABC policy—Anywhere But China—for manufacturing. Our manufacturers need to get out of China, and go anywhere but China. We don’t want a head on conflict with China; nobody wants that in the world. And so the only way we can counter that is economically. And if we starve the economic engine, Xi Jinping will have to turn and adapt to the policies in the world,” Yoho said.

Going on the Offensive

Aaron Friedberg, professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University and former deputy assistant for National Security Affairs in the Office of the Vice President, was one of the four expert witnesses at the hearing.

He said Americans haven’t yet achieved a consensus on the nature of the challenge imposed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) rulers.

“After a prolonged period of collective denial we’ve finally started to acknowledge the existence of some very troubling symptoms. But we haven’t yet reached agreement on a diagnosis of their cause, nor on a prescription for treating them.

“It is vital that we do so, and preferably sooner rather than later,” he said.

Friedberg agrees that America’s “gamble” with China has not paid off.

“China has clearly become far richer and stronger, but instead of loosening its grip, the CCP regime has become even more repressive and more militantly nationalistic. Instead of evolving towards a truly market-based economy, Beijing continues to deploy state-directed, market-distorting, mercantilist policies. Meanwhile, China’s external behavior has become more assertive, and even in certain respects aggressive.”

Friedberg said that the CCP has three strategic objectives: “First and foremost, to preserve the power of the CCP. Second, to restore China to what the regime sees as its proper, historic status as the preponderant power in eastern Eurasia. Third, to become a truly global player, with power, presence and influence on par with, and eventually superior to, that of the United States.”

“One reason they are pressing so hard now is that they see a window of opportunity that may not stay open forever.”

Friedberg said, apart from weakening democratic institutions in African nations and other parts of the global South, the CCP also seeks to exploit and widen divisions within the West.

Friedberg proposed three measures to counter the CCP: First, to work with friends and allies; second, to figure out “exactly where and to what extent we should seek to disentangle or decouple our economies from China’s”;

“Third and finally: we cannot afford to remain entirely on the defensive in our evolving competition with China. We need to find ways to illuminate the brutal and corrupt character of the CCP regime and to impose costs on it for its egregious and harmful behavior, both at home and abroad.”

CCP Projecting Values

Elizabeth Economy, senior fellow and director for Asia Studies, Council on Foreign Relations, said in her testimony that “The U.S.-China relationship has entered a new, increasingly contentious period that is marked more by overt confrontation and competition than by coordination and cooperation.”

She noted that the CCP now has eyes everywhere, with as many as 200 million surveillance cameras contributing to control of the population; and Beijing is now applying their tools of social control to foreign enterprises and citizens too.

In addition, a “virtual wall” was created to limit the influence of foreign ideas and capital inside China, while the CCP seeks to project its own values, priorities and policies globally to expand its political, economic, and security influence and power.

Economy said that the U. S. must move beyond its more reactive and defensive strategy to adopt a strategy that reflects a more profound and sustainable path to effective competition with China.
