China’s Sina Weibo was recently interviewed by the Chinese Communist Party’s CyberSpace Administration Office and fined 3 million yuan ($471,099) after Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai posted a sex scandal about Zhang Gaoli on Weibo. Weibo was criticized for repeatedly allowing “prohibited information”, which is a serious matter, and ordered to immediately rectify the situation and deal with those responsible.
On Dec. 14, China’s CyberSpace Administration Office issued an announcement on its WeChat public account, requiring Weibo to “improve” its system of “review”, “inspection” and “emergency disposal” of information, and warning Sina.com not to provide a platform for the dissemination of “illegal and non-compliant” information. However, the announcement did not specify what kind of information Weibo had published and disseminated was in violation of the law.
As a result, Weibo’s stock price plummeted by 2.36% on that day, reaching a new low since its IPO.
Weibo immediately issued a statement saying that it “sincerely accepts” the regulator’s criticism and has set up a working group to rectify and implement the situation. Weibo’s announced corrective measures were aimed at “soft pornography” and “homogenized malicious marketing”.
This is not the first time Weibo has been fined, as it was fined 44 times between January and November this year, with an accumulated fine of RMB 14.3 million ($2.24 M), according to an announcement from the CyberSpace Administration Office.
